The AP curriculum and testing dates are nationally standardized by the College Board. The courses are college courses which cover an enormous amount of information. Nationally, most school systems start classes in August and end their school year in May (hence the May testing dates for AP). When Virginia Beach students start the school year the day after Labor Day, they are already behind many students in other states. A summer assignment helps to make up for the lost time and better prepares the student to start rigorous work right from the first day of class. Furthermore, these assignments allow teachers to more effectively cover all of the AP content resulting in higher scores on the AP exam.
