Swine Flu Information: Virginia Beach City Public Schools, in partnership with the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health, will offer an in-school student vaccination program for the H1N1 flu. This vaccine, scheduled to begin on October 21, will be offered to all students enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. So that all of our parents understand how the program will proceed, we offer important information on the school division's website CLICK HERE to view. This same information was included in the H1N1 special edition of Apple-A-Day that went home with students on October 16, 2009.

If you want your student to be included in the vacination program please fill out and return the consent form to the Main Office at Cox High School. For questions or conerns please refer to the division's website at the link above or you may contact Lois Smith, School Nurse, at 648-5257. Please remember that if your student is out with flu-like symptons and fever, please have him or her report to the Clinic upon their return for a temperature check. Thank you!

Immunization Update: Tdap vaccine required for all 9th graders for the school year 2009-2010. Please check with your physician to be sure your student is current. You many contact the nurse, Mrs. Smith, with any questions.

November is Great American Smokeout Month, but every month is a great month to quit. Help your smoking teen quit. For more information see Mrs. Smith in the clinic.

Reasons to Quit!
20 minutes after quitting:
Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.
12 hours after quitting:
The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
2 weeks to 3 months after quitting:
Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.
1 to 9 months after quitting:
Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that
move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the
ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

1 year after quitting:
The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
5 years after quitting:
Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to15 years after quitting.
10 years after quitting:
The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk
of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas
decrease.

15 years after quitting:
The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker's.
