Testing Information

A stroll through Virginia's Standards of Learning

What are SOL Tests?

The SOL tests are state required end of course tests, administered to students who have passed an SOL course.

Which classes have SOL tests?

There are 12 SOL tests:   English 11 Writing, English 11 Reading, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, World Geography, World History I, World History II, and VA/US History.

How many SOL tests do I have to pass?

The number of SOL tests needed for graduation depends on when you entered public school in Virginia.   This information is available in the Student Guide, and if you have additional questions, you may check with your guidance counselor to determine your specific requirements.

How often are the tests administered?

The SOL tests are administered at the completion of the course, traditionally in May.   If you have moved to Virginia from another state or have transferred from a private school and previously passed SOL courses, or you have passed a class and previously failed the SOL test, you may take SOL tests for the courses you have passed during retakes in January, May, and July.    You will be notified by mail of the specific testing dates and times, and you will be required to register for the tests you wish to take.   You may take the tests as many times as you wish until you pass them.

Is SOL tutoring available?

Tutoring is available after school throughout the year, and review sessions are offered on the two Saturdays prior to the May test administration.   Five day intensive tutoring is available in the summer, and registration for these classes takes place during summer school registration in June.   There is no charge for any of these sessions.   In addition, the Virginia Department of Education posts previously administered tests on the statewebsite (www.pen.k12.va.us).   You may download the Released Tests or EPAT (online tests) for practice.

If you have further questions regarding the SOL tests, please see Ms. Matson, School Improvement Specialist, in Room 141 or call her at 496-6767, extension 58227. If you have questions regarding your graduation requirements, please see your guidance counselor or call her at 496-6767, extension 58209.
