Dr. Michael D. Kelly, Principal

Dr. Michael KellyDr. Michael Kelly began his tenure at Cox High School in July of 2017.  Prior to this appointment, he was a full-time clinical associate professor at Virginia Tech in the School of Education, within the Department of Leadership, Counseling and Research. There, he specialized in school law and public school budgeting.  Prior to transitioning to higher education, he was the principal of Lynnhaven Middle School in Virginia Beach, where he held this position for 6 years. Under Dr. Kelly’s supervision, the school was identified as a "National Middle School to Watch" by the Virginia Department of Education and the National Middle School Association. Lynnhaven also was given “The Award of Excellence” by the National PTA for its outstanding parental involvement. While principal of Lynnhaven, Dr. Kelly was also elected as the President of the Virginia Beach Association of Secondary School Principals. The VBASSP represents approximately 130 secondary administrators system wide. Dr. Kelly is a certified assessor for the NASSP’s 21st Century Principals program, and is also a grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education. 
Dr. Kelly has dedicated close to two decades so far to public school education, all in the Virginia Beach City Public School system.  Prior to his position as a principal, he served as an assistant principal at two schools, was a middle school teacher for eight years, and a wrestling coach as well.  In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, golfing, fishing at the lake, coaching girls’ lacrosse and spending time with family and friends. He has been blessed to be married to his lovely wife Amy for over 25 years. They have two daughters, Maddie and Gail, who both graduated from Cox HS
