BENEFITS

Cox soccer event to aid Brain Tumor Society

Brannon Thomas had tickets for this weekend's ACC basketball tournament in Tampa, but now he'll have to watch it on TV.

Thomas, a 2000 Cox graduate, will join as many as 30 other alums - including state Sen. Ken Stolle - in a benefit alumni soccer scrimmage against the Falcons' current boys varsity team at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cox.

Thomas suffered a seizure in July 2003, before his senior season at William and Mary. An MRI revealed a brain tumor, which was surgically removed a month later.

During his ongoing recovery, Thomas has put together a team to run in the 5K Race for Hope on May 6 in Washington that benefits the Brain Tumor Society. Cox assistant coach Scott Mead said that more than $2,000 raised in advance of Saturday's soccer event will be donated to sponsor Thomas' team, along with any money raised Saturday.

This will be the fifth year of the scrimmage, and it has benefited a number of charities.

SOCCER

Donated equipment will be sent to Iraqi children

Donations of gently used soccer equipment will be collected throughout Thursday's Kempsville at Cox boys and girls games beginning at 5:30 p.m.

These items will be donated to Virginia Rush Soccer's "In Gear" program that plans to send the equipment to children in Iraq at the end of April.

Each donor will receive a raffle ticket for a prize drawing to be held at halftime of the boys game. Prizes include gift certificates to two restaurants.
